In the Field

Got No Backbone? Vargas Island, BC, Canada. August 3, 1994.

I was wandering along a deserted coastal beach when I ran across this grouping of tracks. Being a biologist it made me laugh (yes, I like Gary Larsen's Far Side cartoons). The tracks in the left-upper part of the frame were made by a deer. Given our location, it is likely that the owner of the hooves was a Black-tailed Deer (a subspecies of Mule Deer). The curling track on the bottom right side of the frame are those of some type of oceanic invertebrate (I can't even begin to guess at what). I imagined the deer encountering the spineless creature and exclaiming "Hey, what's wrong - Got No Backbone?"
