In the Field

Reflecting on Diggie's Pond. Findlay Creek, BC, Canada. April 6, 2005.

This is a reflection of a forest caught in one of Diego's (who is one of my Portuguese Water Dogs) favourite swimming holes. The multi-coloured vertical streaks in the bottom two thirds of the image are trembling aspen trees. The dark reddish band closer to the top of the image is actually a band of Red Osier Dogwood bushes (prior to leafing out). And the gold band along the top of the image are dead, brown grasses growing near to the shoreline. While I've been to this pond hundreds of times, this was the only time where the lighting and atmospheric conditions all conspired to produce this abstract painterly light reflection.

As a photographer I often find myself torn between exploring new terrain versus returning again and again to familiar locations and seeing how seasonal and lighting differences impact on the "same old" scene. The compromise that's working for me right now is to stick near home for the bulk of the year (which is pretty special anyway given our rural location in the southeast Kootenays wedged the Rocky and Purcell Mountains!) and doing one or two more exotic photography trips per year.
