In the Field

Grass Glowing in Morning Light. Weaselhead Natural Area, Calgary, AB, Canada. December 26, 1989.

This image is an ancient one pulled from the archives. It's a simple image - just a piece of grass that is strongly side/back lit by the sun and with the sunlight shimmering off of ice crystals in the background. This image embodies an approach I take when producing "Extracts" - just simplify and isolate. And, that's my mantra - simplify and isolate; simplify and isolate...

But just how do you do it? It's partly a matter of how you look at things, and partly a matter of understanding how the scene changes depending both upon the aperture you choose and the distance between your subject and your camera. It just takes a little practise - and remembering to chant "simplify and isolate, simplify and isolate..."
