In the Field

Finding Light in the Rainforest. Mussel Inlet (Great Bear Rainforest), BC, Canada. September 11, 2005.

Like the image entitled About to Alight, this image was shot in northern BC's Great Bear Rainforest and the birds were flying in and out of a narrow band of light with the extremely dark forest behind. The contrast between the birds and the background was striking!

In this case there was so much action - and it was happening so quickly - that I had little choice but to point my camera in the middle of the flock and hope that its autofocus system would "lock-on" to a bird and pull it into focus. I took a sequence of images and this one came out the best. So I guess this image is pretty much the definition of a "lucky catch!"
