In the Field

Rock Squirrel Soiled by Soil. Zion National Park, Utah, USA. April 3, 1993.

What do Rock Squirrels eat? Well, rocks and dirt, of course! At least, that's what you'd think if this image is all you had to go by. This semi-ancient image was acquired during a whirlwind trip through the desert southwest in the USA. This particularly approachable little excavator (the squirrel was digging in the dirt, not eating it) was found just off a major trail in Zion National Park and was, consequently, very tame. Which is one of the advantages to photographing wildlife in heavily-used National Parks.
